DNA Histamine and additional blood testing +

Gain insight into your genetic predisposition, histamine load, and recovery potential with Functional Medicine

What is histamine?
Histamine is regarded as a neuro-immuno-endocrine system mediator and is produced by many cell types, including basophils and mast cells. Histamine plays a vital role in your immune system, nervous system, and gastrointestinal tract. But when your body struggles to break it down effectively, it can lead to a wide range of persistent and often misunderstood symptoms — from skin reactions and nasal congestion to digestive discomfort, headaches, hormonal shifts, and anxiety.

At DNA Care, we specialize in identifying complex patterns in genetics and biochemistry that often go undetected in standard care. This unique assessment combines genetic analysis (DAO and HNMT) with whole blood histamine testing, providing valuable insight into how your body processes histamine — and guiding a truly personalized support strategy.

Could histamine be affecting your health?

Histamine intolerance or overload can manifest in many ways — often without clear diagnostic markers. Common symptoms include:

Skin: flushing, itching, hives, eczema
Respiratory: nasal congestion, asthma-like symptoms
Gut: bloating, cramps, loose stools, IBS-like symptoms
Brain: headaches, anxiety, irritability, insomnia
Hormonal: PMS, cycle-related migraines

These symptoms may be influenced by genetic variants in enzymes that help clear histamine — particularly DAO (diamine oxidase) and HNMT (histamine-N-methyltransferase) — as well as by acquired factors like gut inflammation, nutrient imbalances, or microbial dysbiosis. This test helps uncover your unique profile and guides targeted support.

What’s included?
Genetic testing: DAO and HNMT
We analyze key SNPs (single nucleotide polymorphisms) in the DAO and HNMT genes — two enzymes essential for histamine degradation. These insights reveal your genetic tendency toward histamine sensitivity or overload.
Whole blood histamine measurement
We assess histamine levels in whole blood to evaluate your current histamine burden. This functional marker adds critical context when interpreted alongside your genetic profile and symptom history.

What makes this test different?
This assessment goes beyond standard histamine testing by combining genetic analysis with real-time whole blood data — offering a dynamic view of how your body manages histamine, both by nature and in the moment.

At DNA Care, we don’t asses lab values in isolation. Your results are interpreted in the context of your symptoms, health history, and epigenetic environment — the interplay between your genes and the world around you. This systems-based, personalized approach reflects the core philosophy of Functional Medicine — identifying upstream factors, not just downstream effects.

Studies have linked DAO and HNMT gene variants to altered histamine clearance and increased susceptibility to symptoms — even when histamine intake appears normal. (Maintz & Novak, 2007; Comas-Basté et al., 2020)
